Kelsey Brod is an artist and Assistant Professor of Media Art in the Department of Communication at UNC Chapel Hill. Brod works with performance theory in the arts and in gender studies to reframe the techno-industrial use of computational performance beyond measurements of efficacy. Her/their practice employs game engines to create open-world games that examine thresholds of being, and machinima that investigate computational representations of number, space, time, and light.
While at Aviário Studio, Brod created vibrant screen prints based on photographs taken in the surrounding area. The resulting images depict a world in which light is mediated both through code and through the process of screen printing.
The "fourth cone theory" — referring to tetrachromacy, a condition in which individuals possess a fourth type of cone cell in the retina, enabling them to perceive a broader spectrum of colours than typical trichromats — was also explored during Brod's residency. Through screen printing, she investigated colours that fall within this expanded range, invisible to most but perceptible to tetrachromats.
