During the month of May I spent an epic few weeks as an Artist in Residence at @aviariostudio located in Ferreira do Zêzere in central Portugal. What a place! This time gave me space to play, explore, experiment, discover, discuss, make, and think. I met and spent time with some truly wonderful, talented, and kind people here and am so grateful to all the team at Aviário, Cristiana, Joãl, Inês, and Daisy - Thank you! what a beautiful environment you have created!
During my time at the studio I played with photocopy image transfer onto zinc plates, using small steel plates coated in varnish to see what marks were created by carrying out different passive actions or allowing nature to make the marks, I continued my exploration into solar plate etching, explored cyanotype, and played with silk screen printing onto wood and tiles!
I drew inspiration from the place / surrounding area and environment - collecting photographs and materials from the landscape to inform my work.
One process became - printing fragments and ‘zoom-ins’ of my photographs that I had taken into etchings and then printed in series/ collections creating one bigger print - aiming to conger a sense of the site and create a narrative of my experience.
I played with imagery taken from combination of found images (photographs of Portuguese folk dancers) and photographs I had taken of rock-scapes and castle ‘gargoyles’. I then screen printed these images onto tiles in random to create slightly obscured colourful composition...
Overall the time and the space allowed me to get back into a creative way of thinking and being, a feeling that has felt very far away recently so I am grateful for this opportunity to really hone in on this.
