Resident in August 2025
Nationality: Japan
Miyako Asaba is a Japanese fiber artist with a passion for creating three-dimensional surfaces — a process she beautifully calls “embroidering the air.” A skilled practitioner of traditional Japanese embroidery, she fell in love with the possibilities of 3D textures and now works with nylon monofilament, a material often used for fishing, sewing, or jewelry-making, reimagining it into delicate yet bold forms. Trained in traditional Japanese embroidery, Miyako fell in love with the possibilities of 3D textures, incorporating them into her work to create new shapes and expressions. At Aviário Studio, she has been experimenting with adding colour to these surfaces, exploring how opaque paints, dyes, and inks (often used in screen printing) can interact with embroidery.
She experimented with new methods, painting her pieces with brushes, printing by hand block or silkscreen, and even trying lithographic transfer on her knitted 3D surfaces. Each experiment expands the language of embroidery. We were honoured to host Miyako at Aviário Studio and to witness her exploration of embroidery beyond the fabric.
