Laurel Wiebe is an American visual artist based in France. She primarily works with oil paint to create figurative works, and illustrates the Instagram comic @mustachio_the_pistachio.
Most of Laurel’s paintings center on portraits of people experiencing a private moment of reflection, often unaware they are being observed. She articulates these feelings with expressive brush strokes and vibrant colors. A fan of all creatures (particularly dogs), Laurel makes pet portraits on commission.
During her two-week residency, Laurel shifted her focus from the face to the body, using acrylic paint and oil pastels. The collection focuses on the shapes of women’s bodies and body parts, unbound from pressure to appear youthful and thin. This resulted in some larger-than-life nudes, exaggerated “imperfections,” wiggly textures, and rainbows of color that celebrate the shapes and texture of the subjects’ skin.
