Artist in Residency 2025 - We were delighted to host German-French artist Karin Stumpf (@karinstumpfart) at Aviário Studio this year. Based in Berlin, Karin explores themes of memory, identity and the transient nature of the self.
During her time with us, she created four powerful 90x90cm linocuts using the lost matrix technique - once each layer is carved away, it can never return. Like memories, like moments. She also worked on clay prints of absent family members - going so far as to tear the matrices apart, representing what's gone but not forgotten. And in a wonderfully experimental project, Karin began her 'headbook', transferring the various senses onto handmade ceramic plates. What began as representations became an installation - a poetic archive of presence and loss.
This residency was not just about art - it was a deep dive into impermanence, emotion and the layered nature of identity.
