Looking into themes of belonging in a digital age, Canadian artist Jules Dufresne brought an existing project they had been working on for the previous year to life. Using self-portraits drawn over the past year, Jules decided to transfer these onto clay in a playful manner - using slip, glaze crayons, and textures from nature, they made a series of 3D tile-like objects, that were then placed in and amongst rocks and foliage. They also discovered a love for screenprinting onto ready-made tiles, which allowed them to produce images with multiple seamless layers. For these, they screenshot pixelated sections of conversations, articles and images from their laptop, and used these as a “fuzz” to emulate the noise and endless loop one can get stuck in when online. The hand-drawn portraits provided a lovely contrast to the harsh digital background.
