Artist in Residence 2024 - Dutch artist Fien Brakkee spent 6 weeks at Aviário in October and November. Most of her practice before her stay had been focused on air, the sky, and casting her eyes upward, but for her stay she wanted to flip that and look to the ground. She therefore sourced a spot with wild clay, which she processed and used to develop her ceramics practice. Ceramics was new to her, so Fien was able to learn coil and slab building, using different clays as well as the natural clay she dug to get a better grasp of the material. Continuing with the avenue of natural materials, she developed ash glazes to use on the pieces she made. In the words of the artist: “air, water, light, land, memory.
